Indian government lowers acceptable cell tower radiation to 1/10th. Smart move.

Dr. Weeks’ Comment:  Good news re public health concerns for electro-pollution: her is a  link to an Indian Government report that calls for the precautionary approach.  Why not be careful until the data is in?  Unfortunately,  the U.S. guidelines allow even higher emissions that India has been allowed.

Mobile Towers: Government decides to cut radiation limits to a tenth from September 1

Durgesh Nandan Jha, TNN Jul 18, 2012, 11.15AM IST

If you are worried by the radiation emitted by cellphone towers around you, there is some good news. From September 1 this year, India will lower the level to one tenth of the prevailing standard – from 9.2 w/m2 (watt per square metre) to 0.92 w/m2.

The decision follows a report of the inter-ministerial committee formed by the ministry of communications and information technology to study the hazards posed by EMF ( electromagnetic field) radiation from base stations and mobile phones.

The probable basis for these actions is the Report on Possible Impacts of Communication Towers on Wildlife Including Birds and Bees, commissioned by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India which calls for a precautionary approach due to the evidence of potential harm to humans and wildlife.  Its recommendations include revisiting safety standards and tightening siting regulations – even to the extent of removing problematic towers (http://www.moef.nic.in/downloads/public-information/final_mobile_towers_report.pdf ).
