What is Oral Immunotherapy?
When pollens and natural plant spores, or antigens, get into our system the body reacts and creates the symptoms that we know as allergies. Doctors have been treating these symptoms with immunotherapy for years. The idea behind immunotherapy is to slowly introduce the body to the antigens it is over reacting to, until it becomes used to them and the allergies symptoms decrease. Traditionally immunotherapy was done by injection, “allergy shots”, by a physician weekly for 1-2 years. Though it was effective in some cases, it was very expensive, time consuming, and limited in the types of allergies it would treat.
