Dr. Weeks’ Comment: For the past 20 years, people have come to me because, in addition to my medical and psychiatric training, my knowledge of applied clinical biochemistry has qualified me to Corrective Psychiatry where (following in the august footsteps of two-time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling and pioneering orthomolecular psychiatrist Abram Hoffer) in we offer the safe and gentle detoxification for people off addictive and sub-optimal medications. This is an appropriate therapeutic option for people only if they believe that they want to correct their biochemical imbalances by replenishing what they are deficient in and detoxifying what they have accumulated in excess. In particular, I have strongly resisted the temptation to prescribe SSRI medications because of how dangerous they are. In my professional opinion, any doctor who prescribes SSRI medications, although this is clearly the current standard of care, is in danger is a malpractice suit since this class of drugs is so disruptive. What to offer instead of SSRI medications? Well, for starters, exercise has consistently out-performed any anti-depressant drug as has cognitive behavioral therapy (CorTHOT) and since SSRI drugs work in part by increasing bioavailable serotonin, why not simply replenish the deficiency of serotonin by eating its natural precursor: the essential amino acid L-tryptophan.
